Italy currently has the most significant number of active cases in the world, as China’s number of active cases is now down to 8,043 with 2,622 in a severe or critical condition.

Italy is in an extremely vulnerable position now that intensive care beds in the Lombardy Region have been depleted.

“What is really shocking — something we had not been able to forecast and brought us to our knees — is the quickness the epidemic spreads,”

Dr. Sergio Cattaneo

The drastic increase in the number of infections has completely overrun Italy’s health system, officials have now begun to beg retired doctors to come out of retirement to help fight the virus temporarily.

The situation in Italy should serve as a stark warning to other Governments around the world and that drastic measures should be taken to slow down the spread of the virus.

“The secret has been — and this should be a strong message for foreign countries — to act early on this, in order to avoid — like in our case — having to chase after it day after day,”

Dr. Sergio Cattaneo

Italian prison inmates have been made to work, making surgical masks to help with the shortage the Italians currently face.

Family life in Italy has been severely impacted due to the lock-down imposed by the Italian Government, Italians usually spend a lot of time out and about socialising and seeing friends.

Typically busy streets are almost entirely empty, military and police checkpoints are visible across webcams at some of the major tourist attractions across Italy.
