Sweden is yet to introduce strict lockdown measures and social distancing orders such as closing pubs and bars, restaurants, non-essential shops and schools.
The Scandinavian country has taken a very different approach from the rest of Europe, which is has largely implemented strict lockdown measures as well as other social distancing precautions.
130 new deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported in Sweden, taking the total number of deaths to the coronavirus in the country to 1,333 fatalities, an average of 94 deaths per day.
Sweden’s leaders have come under criticism, both nationally and internationally, from the scientific and medical community, for refusing to implement strict lockdown measures.
Pubs, bars and restaurants in the nations are still open, along with primary schools, and public gatherings of 50 people are still allowed to go ahead, despite the deadly pandemic that has killed many throughout the rest of Europe.
According to Government officials in Sweden:
“People in Sweden have a high level of trust in government agencies — this means that a large proportion of people follow government agencies’ advice,” officials say.
They added: “In the current situation, people in Sweden are on the whole acting responsibly to reduce the spread of infection by, for example, restricting their social contacts.”
“This crisis may continue for a long time, and in order for the measures to work over time, people need to understand and accept them.”
The new cases of infection that were announced today are the highest 24-hour jump since 722 new cases of the disease were added were reported.
There are currently a total of 12,540 cases of infection of COVID-19 in Sweden, with a reported number of 1,333 deaths and 550 people are reported to have recovered from the coronavirus in the country.
