War Hero Captain Tom Moore Completes 100th Lap of Garden, Raising over £14 Million for NHS

WW11 hero Captain Tom Moore completed the final 10 laps of his fundraising walk this morning, raising over £14 million for the NHS so far.

Upon finishing his challenge, he said: “I never ever dreamt I would be involved in such an occasion. We’re doing so well and knowing that the reason we started off was for the NHS.”

He went on to add: “I think you’ve all got to remember that we will get through it in the end, it will all be right, but it might take time. All the people finding it difficult at the moment, the sun will shine again, and the clouds will go away.”

Captain Moore was then able to enjoy Michael Ball singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ live from his home. The singer congratulated the war veteran, saying: “It’s an extraordinary achievement. I’ve been trying to think of a song which encapsulates your achievement and what you have done for us.”

When asked about the choice of song, Captain Moore said: “First of all, Michael is such as super singer. I think that it’s true that people, we will not walk alone, wherever you are, there are people thinking about you thinking that soon everything will be better, and we will all be smiling again.”

The war hero was also asked about what he thought about a potential knighthood, responding, “It would be marvellous to have such an honour, but I don’t expect anything like that. I think it would be absolutely enormous if I was knighted, to be Sir Thomas Moore, I have never heard of anything like that before.”

His daughter has previously expressed her amazement at the amount of money he has raised for the NHS so far, saying: “It is just incredible and I’m sure it is going to go higher when he finishes his walk.”

Captain Moore has also been praised by many high profile figures across the country, including Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who said at the daily coronavirus press briefing: “I want to pay a special tribute today to Captain Tom Moore. Captain Tom, you’re an inspiration to us all, thank you.”

Captain Moore, who served in India and Burma, decided that he would walk ten laps of his garden every day, until he had completed 100 laps, before his 100th birthday later this month.

The 99-year-old originally set out to raise £1,000 for the NHS as they battle against the coronavirus pandemic, but as news of his fundraising efforts spread, the target on his JustGiving page steadily increased.

To date, he has received donations from over 620,000 supporters and his accomplishment has led to members of the public creating the hashtag #ClapForTom, which urges people up and down the country to clap for the war veteran tonight, as well as for the NHS and other key workers who are currently battling on the frontline against the coronavirus pandemic.

Cheshire Police tweeted their support earlier: “Well done @captaintommoore, an amazing achievement. As well as clapping for the NHS, carers and other key workers tonight, we will definitely #ClapForTom.”
