Gyms and leisure centres in England to re-open from the 25th of July

The UK Culture Secretary has confirmed that gyms, indoor pools and leisure centres, as well as beauty salons, tanning shops and tattooists can re-open in England from the 25th of July

Gyms and swimming pools, as well as other sports facilities in England are to be allowed to re-open their doors once again and this summer’s club cricket season is also permitted to get under way.

A day after the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, announced cheaper meals at restaurants when he urged the nation to “eat out to help out”, the government is beginning to relax lockdown restrictions in order to encourage the nation to get fit again.

Outdoor swimming pools in England will be permitted to re-open from the 11th of July, with swimming pools, indoor gyms, dance studios and sports such as badminton and volleyball being allowed from the 25th of July.

According to the BBC, most people in the UK over the age of 75 will be required to start paying for their TV licence from the 1st of August.

At a Downing Street press briefing, the UK’s Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden confirmed that beauty salons and tanning shops, as well as tattooists will be able to re-open in England starting on Monday.

Outdoor arts performances, which includes dance and music, as well as theatres and opera, will also be permitted to resume business from this weekend, although the sizes of the audiences will be restricted and social distancing rules will have to be followed.

“Normal life is slowly returning,” Mr Dowden said.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden, announced the big re-opening, saying:

“The reopening of gyms is the news millions across the country have been waiting for with many people desperate to jump on a spinning bike or dive into a pool.”

“Our comprehensive guidance will ensure gyms, pools and leisure centres have the support they need to reopen safely for their customers and staff.”

“Helping people return to gyms safely will also help the nation get match-fit to defeat this virus.”

But Mr Downing said face coverings would not need to be worn in gyms.

“We have not taken a decision to require the wearing of face masks in respect of gyms,” he said.

He said: “I’m really urging people to get out there and to play their part: buy the tickets for outdoor plays and musical recitals, get to your local gallery and support your local businesses.

“Our fight began with a collective effort and I really hope it will end with one.”

“At the beginning we all stayed at home to protect the NHS and save lives, now the British public has a new part to play. It’s time to eat out to help out, to enjoy the arts to help out and to work out to help out.”

“It’s over to all of you to help the country recover safely.”

This comes after the chief executive of Hillingdon hospital in West London, which has now closed its A&E unit following an outbreak of COVID-19, has blamed its staff for not wearing masks at work.
