Harvey Weinstein found guilty of rape and sexual assault in trial following #MeToo scandal

This is the prison sentence Weinstein could face

Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty of committing a criminal sex act in the first degree involving one woman and rape in the third degree involving another woman.

Here are the sentencing guidelines for those charges:

  • Probation to four years in prison for rape in the third degree
  • At least five to 25 years in prison for criminal sexual act in the first degree

He was acquitted on the more serious charges of predatory sexual assault involving the two women, Miriam Haley and Jessica Mann. Those charges carried a recommended sentence of 10 years to life in prison.

There was a jury of seven men and five women at the New York supreme court, they took five days to come to their decision for the verdict. They found the Weinstein guilty of a criminal sex act in the first degree for forcing oral sex on the former Project Runway production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.

The jury also convicted Weinstein of rape in the third degree. This relates to him raping another woman in a New York hotel in 2013.

Weinstein, whose sexual abuse of young female actors sparked the #MeToo in Hollywood and elsewhere, which is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault. He will spend his time ‘locked up’ in a New York state prison.

Weinstein, 67, reportedly planned his attacks in advance, carefully selecting vulnerable victims of whom he had power over in the entertainment industry. Lawyer Kendra Barkoff, who spoke on behalf of accusers of Harvey Weinstein issued a short statement after the verdict saying “This conviction would not be possible without the testimony of the courageous women and the many women who have spoken out,”.
