Johnson admits that it’s ludicrous he’s the PM, says Cummings

Dominic Cummings has redoubled his criticism of the Prime Minister, saying that Boris Johnson cannot distinguish “between truth and lies”

The former top adviser to the PM said that Boris Johnson “lies so blatantly, so naturally, so regularly” that he sees “no real distinction”.

In a blog post, Dominic Cummings said that Mr Johnson “regularly admits it’s ludicrous he’s prime minister”.

It is the latest broadside against the Prime Minister from Mr Cummings since he was forced out of his position at No 10 last year, following a power struggle internally.

But the former chief aide also defended his decision to join Boris Johnson’s top team in 2019, despite believing that he was “unfit to be PM”.

This comes after Boris Johnson will be revealing how his government plans to “restore people’s freedoms” within England at a news conference at 5pm today, ahead of the final stage of the Prime Minister’s roadmap out of the nation’s COVID-19 lockdown efforts.

In a blog post to paying subscribers to his Substack website, Mr Cummings claimed that Mr Johnson “regularly admits it’s ludicrous he’s prime minister”.

He wrote that the Prime Minister is “hopeless at bureaucratic infighting,” and “routinely says and does things so foolish that people are open-mouthed”.

Mr Cummings also added that he knew Boris Johnson was “in any objective sense, unfit to be PM” when he had agreed to become the senior adviser to the PM in summer 2019.

But despite this, he added that he and former members of the Vote Leave campaign decided to “roll the dice” on Johnson and join his No 10 team anyway, believing that his defects could be “partly mitigated” when in office.

Cummings also said that they believed without their help, that the Conservatives would fail in resolving the post-referendum “constitutional crisis”.

He wrote that this could have led to a second referendum, with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn winning leadership, which would be “probably be an even bigger disaster”.

He also justified the move as being a chance to deliver post-Brexit political reforms, adding that they believed that Boris Johnson’s weaknesses could be “turned to advantage”.

This comes after there will reportedly be no “legal compulsion” to wear face masks once the coronavirus restrictions in England are lifted, the environment secretary has said, as he said that he will be ditching his face mask when the rules are scrapped.

He wrote that the Prime Minister’s “ignorance of Whitehall” and his “desire to enjoy himself rather than work hard” had provided a “very weird opportunity to force through certain important things that the system left to itself won’t do”.

“Precisely because he doesn’t know what he’s doing, we may be able to get him to agree things ‘the system’ will think are ‘extreme’ but we think are necessary,” he added.

“As often in politics the immediate prospect of a second referendum and Corbyn – with all the misery, poverty and damage to democracy this would bring – outweighed calculations about the distant future”.
