Three weeks of rain could fall in 24 hours for some in the UK

Three weeks of rain could fall on parts of Wales in just over 24 hours, with warnings of heavy downpours also in place throughout northern England.

Yellow and Amber weather warnings cover a large area of Wales, with up to 90mm of rainfall due to pour over Monday until midday on Tuesday.

The average rainfall in Wales for the whole of March is 117mm, this means that those areas that are worst affected, could be hit by three weeks of rain in just over 24 hours.

These warnings indicate that flooding to some businesses and homes is likely to happen, roads are likely to be blocked, and there is a risk of spray and large puddles of standing water on the roads.

A yellow weather warning is also cover a large area in the North of England, with a projected 50mm of rain, a little under half the monthly average for March, due to fall on Monday until Tuesday lunchtime, in places including the cities of Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Huddersfield.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “Through Monday it will be a fairly bright start, but we will see rain spread in from the west by the afternoon.

“Then we will see heavy rain right through the rest of Monday, overnight and into Tuesday morning.”

Mr Dewhurst added: “The ground is already saturated and with all the rainfall we have had over recent weeks it is likely to lead to further flooding in places.”

The government agency, Natural Resources Wales, had no severe flood warnings and no flood warnings in place on Monday morning.

The agency had one flood alert in place, meaning that flooding could be possible. Wales has been hit hard by flooding in recent weeks.

The Environment Agency had 0 severe flood warnings, 22 flood warnings and 102 flooding alerts in place for England on Monday morning.
