This summer’s Wimbledon has been cancelled as a result of coronavirus, the All England Club has confirmed. It’s the first time since the Second World War the oldest tennis tournament in the world, founded in 1877, won’t be held.
Among the most significant events in the yearly tennis calendar the Championships was expected to be held for 2 weeks from 29 June. Questions over whether it was likely to proceed have been asked for months, with the French Open, due to begin on 24 May, postponed in mid-March for four months.
The All England Club declared last week a postponement wouldn’t be “without significant risk and difficulty”, but said it was confident it could refund ticket and debenture holders through its own insurance.
Wimbledon’s warm-up grass championships in Birmingham, Nottingham, Eastbourne and at London’s Queen’s Club will also have to be postponed. All tennis courts and facilities are closed across the UK because Boris Johnson put the nation in lockdown on 23 March.
