Millions of people in the UK took to their doorsteps at 8 pm last night to cheer and clap for NHS staff and other key workers.
This is the third consecutive week that the British public has taken part in the Clap For Our Carers campaign that was extended last week to include all key workers, including supermarket staff, delivery drivers, teachers, and members of the emergency services who are continuing to work during the coronavirus outbreak.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock took to Twitter to show himself clapping last night, saying: “A huge THANK YOU to our incredible NHS & social care staff. We can never thank you enough for all that you are doing for the nation #ClapForCarers.”
People were seen not only clapping and cheering but also banging pans, blowing horns, and even setting off fireworks in their gardens, all in their support of the people across the country who are working tirelessly to keep the nation going during these unprecedented times.
The official spokesperson for the Prime Minister, who is out of intensive care but still recovering from coronavirus in hospital, said: “The Prime Minister thanks the NHS for the brilliant care which it is providing. The claps for carers have provided wonderful, unifying moments for the entire country. I’m sure that tonight we will once again see people in their millions paying tribute to our fantastic dedicated care workers.”
In the North West of England, a business arranged for a banner to be flown across the sky over hospitals in Liverpool, Southport and Ormskirk. The banner read: “Thank you NHS and Front Line Services.”
This touching tribute was carried out by Peter Robinson, who owns furniture store Charlotte Lucy’s Fitted Bedrooms in Liverpool.

He wrote on Facebook: “Us here at Charlotte Lucy’s have been thinking how we could show our support for the NHS, key workers and front line workers . . . so after a lot of thought, we have arranged a way to get the message out to thank all the NHS staff, doctors, nurses, cleaners, truck drivers, bin men, all shop workers, teachers… right the way down the line of front line workers.”
As the UK takes part in the weekly Clap For Our Carers, they are being urged to raise £5m for NHS staff with the One Million Claps appeal. NHS Charities Together is asking people to text “clap” to 70507, along with any messages of support. The money raised will go towards funding food deliveries, overnight stays, protective kits and travel costs.
Ellie Orton, Chief Executive of NHS Charities Together, has said:
“Like everyone else, I’ve been incredibly moved by the millions of us showing our public support for our health service over the last two Thursday evenings. I really hope One Million Claps inspires those who can, to give a donation that will make a real difference to the amazing staff and volunteers who are daily saving lives and battling against this horrible virus on our behalf.”
