Four-day bank holiday for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

The Queen is the first monarch to ever celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, having acceded to the throne at age 25 on the 6th of February 1952

Buckingham Palace will be marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a series of events that will take place next year, including a live concert that will feature some of the biggest stars in the world.

The Queen’s seven-decade reign is set to be marked with a host of celebrations spanning a special four-day bank holiday weekend from the 2nd to the 5th of June 2022 next year.

More than 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians are set to come together in order to stage Trooping the Colour in full for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic on the first day of the bank holiday.

The parade will close with the traditional fly-past by the RAF, viewed by the Queen, 95, as well as the other members of the Royal Family from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

This comes after the UK government is considering paying teachers to add an extra 30 minutes to school days in England under leaked proposals, in order to help pupils overcome a year of disruption that was caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The long tradition of celebrating royal jubilees for monarchs, weddings and coronations by lighting beacons will also be continued on the day.

Beacons are set to be lit across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, as well as at UK Overseas Territories and, for the first time, in each of the capital cities of the countries of the Commonwealth.

The following day a Service of Thanksgiving is to be held at St Paul’s Cathedral and on the third day of the weekend, a Saturday, will see the Queen joined by other members of the royal family at the Derby, held at Epsom Downs.

That evening a live concert will also be staged at Buckingham Palace, which will be called the Platinum Party at the Palace.

Performers are yet to have been named but it is billed as bringing together some of the world’s biggest stars in the entertainment business to celebrate the most significant and joyous moments of the Queen’s long time as the monarch.

On the Sunday a pageant featuring more than 5,000 people and combining street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume will be taking place on the streets around Buckingham Palace.

Communities across the country will also be sitting down together for what is being called the Big Jubilee Lunch, with people will be invited to share friendship, food and fun with their neighbours as part of the bank holiday celebrations.

This comes after the easing of coronavirus restrictions has been paused for millions in Scotland, but rules will be relaxed within Glasgow from Saturday. Most of the country had been due to take the step down to level one in the Scottish five-tier system from next week.

The Queen will be the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, having acceded to the throne on the 6th of February 1952 when she was just 25 years old.

The palace has said that there will also be celebrations throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world throughout next year and that the Queen and members of the Royal Family are planning variety of engagements to mark the milestone.

Individual members of the royal family have yet to be named in the plans but it is likely the Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and other members of the monarchy will attend various events.
