President of Haiti Jovenel Moïse killed in an attack at his home

Jovenel Moïse, the President of Haiti, has been killed in an attack on his home within the nation’s capital, says the country’s interim prime minister

Jovenel Moïse, the President of Haiti, has been killed in an attack on his home. Claude Joseph said that the president’s home in Port-au-Prince was stormed by a group of unidentified armed men at 01:00 local time (around 05:00 GMT).

First Lady Martine Moïse had also been injured in the attack on their home.

Mr Joseph has said that “all measures had been taken to guarantee the continuity of the state”.

Claude Joseph has now taken control of the impoverished Caribbean nation, and has urged that the nation’s public remains calm.

This comes after the former top adviser to the PM said that Boris Johnson “lies so blatantly, so naturally, so regularly” that he sees “no real distinction”. In a blog post, Dominic Cummings said that Boris Johnson “regularly admits it’s ludicrous he’s prime minister”.

He called the shooting of the country’s president being a “heinous, inhuman and barbaric act”.

Jovenel Moïse, aged 53, had been in power since February of 2017, after his predecessor Michel Martelly had stepped down from office.

Mr Moïse’s time as President was rocky as he had faced accusations of corruption and was challenged by many waves of often violent anti-government protests.

There were widespread protests within the capital and other cities earlier this year, as people had demanded for his resignation.

Haiti’s opposition said that Mr Moïse’s five-year term should have ended on the 7th of February 2021, five years to the day since Mr Martelly had stepped down.

But there had been a year’s delay to elections after that, and Mr Moïse had insisted that he had one more year to serve as he did not take office until the 7th of February 2017.

In February, on the day the opposition wanted him to leave office, Mr Moïse said an attempt to kill him and overthrow the nation’s government has been foiled.

Chronic instability, dictatorships and natural disasters have left Haiti as one of the poorest nations in the Americas.

This comes after Boris Johnson’s government is introducing three sets of legislation that will be making human rights violations more likely to occur in the UK and less likely to be sanctioned even as averting climate catastrophe depends on these rights, according to the UN special rapporteur for human rights and the environment.

It has seen an increase violent gang crime and kidnappings as well as worsening living standards within a nation where nearly 60% already live below the poverty line.

An earthquake in 2010 killed over 200,000 people in Haiti and caused extensive damage to both infrastructure and the nation’s economy.

A UN peacekeeping force was put in place back in 2004 to help stabilise the country, and only withdrew in 2017.
