Tiger Woods has suffered “multiple open fractures” to his right leg after being in a serious car crash that took place in Los Angeles, according to a surgeon working at the hospital that is treating him.

In a statement posted on the professional golfer’s official Twitter account by his TGR foundation, Anish Mahajan, who is the chief medical officer at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where the sportsman has undergone emergency surgery by orthopaedic trauma specialists, said that Woods had suffered “significant” injuries “to his right lower extremity”.

“Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilised by inserting a rod into the tibia,” he said.

“Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilised with a combination of screws and pins.

“Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

This comes after A father-to-be from New York state has sadly died, and his brother had been injured, after a device he was building for his unborn child’s gender-reveal party exploded, according to the police.

TGR then added that the 45-year-old is “currently awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room”.

Earlier, authorities in the area that were investigating the car crash said that there was no evidence that Tiger Woods was impaired at the time.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, the deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and who was the first on the scene.

The sheriff’s office has said that Woods was the only person who was in the car, and authorities then later confirmed that his injuries were not life-threatening but they said that he was in a “serious” condition.

The pro golfer sustained “serious injuries to both legs” during the car crash, according to Daryl Osby, who is the Los Angeles County Fire Department chief.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva, speaking at a news conference, said that the investigators at the scene “did not see any evidence of impairment” although they said that there were reportedly indications that the vehicle was being driven by Mr Woods at a “relatively greater speed than normal”.

Aerial footage of the crash showed the car on its side, with the front end of the vehicle heavily damaged with its airbags having been deployed.

This come after airlines have said that they have already seen a surge in holiday bookings following the PM’s announcement of the road map out of the nationwide lockdown. On Holiday bookings, the Prime Minister has said that a global travel taskforce would put forward a report on how to return to international travel on the 12th of April.

Despite the huge damage occurring to the 2021 Genesis SUV, the interior “remained more or less intact, giving [Woods] the cushion to survive what would have otherwise been a fatal crash”, Mr Villanueva said.

The car was found 213 metres (700ft) from the central divider at the intersection, having been driven into a kerb and then hitting a tree before rolling several times, the sheriff then added.

Woods was reportedly “alert and talking” when paramedics arrived at the scene, according to Jennifer Bjorklund, the NBC News correspondent.
