WhatsApp message suggests PM called Hancock ‘totally f****** hopeless’

Dominic Cummings has shared a WhatsApp message in which Boris Johnson appears to call the Health Secretary’s efforts “totally f****** hopeless”

The Prime Minister’s former chief aide, Dominic Cummings, has been engaged in a weeks-long feud with Downing Street, and has published a lengthy blogpost that he claimed shows details of how:

“Number10/Hancock have repeatedly lied about the failures last year”.

Included in his over 7,000 words, Mr Cummings also included a series of screenshots from what he has claimed to be his WhatsApp exchanges while he was working in Downing Street during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

In one exchange, that Mr Cummings said was part of late-night messages on that were sent on the 26th of March 2020, he and Boris Johnson are shown to be discussing actions from “MH” in boosting the UK’s coronavirus testing capacity.

The screenshot shows a reply, that is purportedly from the prime minister himself, stating: “Totally f****** hopeless”.

This comes after This comes after, in a judgment that took place on Wednesday, the High Court deemed that by awarding of the £560,000 contract to the communications agency Public First, which has connections with cabinet minister Michael Gove and Dominic Cummings, the UK government broke the law.

Mr Cummings said, shortly after receiving the message from the prime minister, that he had a series of missed calls from the Mr Johnson calling to say that he’d tested positive for COVID-19.

In another exchange, said to be from the 27th of April last year, Mr Johnson is said to have openly wondered about removing responsibility for the procuring of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) away from Matt Hancock and giving it to Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove instead.

Mr Johson is claimed to have sent a WhatsApp message saying: “On ppe it’s a disaster. I can’t think of anything except taking Hancock off and putting Gove on.”

Mr Cummings also used his blog to describe what he had referred to as the contrasting styles between the handling of key coronavirus meetings between Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who had deputised for the prime minister after he fell seriously ill with COVID-19.

The prime minister’s former adviser had written that meetings under Mr Raab were “less pleasant for everybody but much more productive”.

“Raab can chair meetings properly instead of telling rambling stories and jokes,” Mr Cummings added.

“He let good officials actually question people so we started to get to the truth.

“Unlike the PM who as soon as things get ‘a bit embarrassing’ does the whole ‘let’s take it offline’ shtick before shouting ‘forward to victory’, doing a thumbs-up and pegging it out of the room before anybody can disagree.”

This comes after most lockdown rules will remain in place in England for four weeks after the planned 21 June easing, Boris Johnson has confirmed. Senior ministers have signed off on a decision to delay the lifting of all legal restrictions had been put upon social contact as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader, branded the accusations coming from Dominic Cummings as being “absolutely damning”.

She said that a promised public inquiry into the government’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis “can’t wait” until next year, adding that: “we can’t allow history to be rewritten.

“In order to get to the truth that public inquiry must begin now.

“Any minister who has been found to have broken the Ministerial Code and lied should and must resign.”

The prime minister has so far declined the opportunity to comment on the claims by his former chief aide when asked about them during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday afternoon.
