Scotland’s chief medical officer was caught ignoring her own advice, by visiting her second home multiple times during lockdown
The Chief medical officer for Scotland, Dr Catherine Calderwood, has stepped down after breaching the UK lockdown precautions, that she had urge the public to follow, by visiting her second home.
Calderwood has been the leading voice in in urging the Scottish public to obey the lockdown. The Scottish Sun photographed her while she was visiting her holiday home in Fyfe over the weekend.
First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, praised Dr Calderwood for providing advice to her and to the Scottish government during the current coronavirus pandemic, she went on to say that:
“People should continue to stay at home to protect the NHS and to save lives.”
The first minister continued:
“It is, however, clear that the mistake she made – even though she has apologised sincerely and honourably for it – risks distracting from and undermining confidence in the government’s public health message at this crucial time. That is not a risk either of us is willing to take.”
Dr Catherine Calderwood said in a statement:
“The first minister and I have had a further conversation this evening and we have agreed that the justifiable focus on my behaviour risks becoming a distraction from the hugely important job that government and the medical profession has to do in getting the country through this coronavirus pandemic.”
On Twitter, Police Scotland said that Dr Calderwood accepted that she had gone against her own advice to the people of Scotland.
In the statement posted on Twitter, Police Scotland said:
Chief Constable Iain Livingstone said: “Local officers visited Dr Catherine Calderwood and spoke to her about her actions, reiterated crucial advice and issued a warning about her future conduct, all of which she accepted.”
“Individuals must not make personal exemptions bespoke to their own circumstances.”
The Scottish Conservatives, Scottish Labour and the Scottish Liberal Democrats had all condemned the actions of the chief medical officer, calling for her resignation.
