We have noticed lots of fake news being spread, saying that the coronavirus is less dangerous than the flu.
Here we will try to explain why governments are taking this seriously and that the coronavirus is more dangerous than the common flu.
Here are some facts about what we know about the coronavirus so far.
What is the death rate of Covid-19 Coronavirus?
As of 12.20 pm today the current reported cases stand at 173,150 and the currently reported deaths stand at 6,664.
Based on these figures, we can see that the current cases to death rate stands at 3.84% a substantial increase from the previous 2% at the start of the outbreak.
Now if we stopped counting new cases and let those numbers play out, the actual death rate would be considerably higher than 3.84%
What is the death rate of the flu?
The death rate for seasonal flu has been reduced to around 0.1% using a combination of research, medicine and vaccines.
Although the seasonal flu virus does have the capability to kill, it has nowhere near the killing potential of coronavirus.
So to answer the question, is the coronavirus more dangerous than the flu?
The simple answer is yes, this is the reason that entire countries have been shut down.
Based on the figures we have currently, one could assume that the coronavirus is around 38 times more deadly than the seasonal flu virus.
Governments are taking drastic measures to stop a deadly virus that has considerable potential to kill.
It is also reasonable to assume that with the rate, coronavirus cases are increasing; the death rate will only continue to grow as the health systems become swamped.
What is happening with the Coronavirus now?
We seem to have reached a point of exponential growth in the number of new cases we being diagnosed globally, the number of new cases of Covid-19 being reported daily is starting to increase substantially.
There are now many countries in the same position we saw Italy in just a few weeks ago, and the virus has spread to a total of 159 countries and territories.
Iran and Spain have reported a large number of cases within the last 24hrs, and the UK published its most significant amount of daily deaths yesterday of 14 deaths in 24hrs.
Should people in the UK be panic buying due to the Coronavirus?
Even though the virus is severe, there is no need to stockpile; the government has been in talks with the supermarkets and supply chains will be maintained.
We had our usual weekly delivery from Tescos last night, and despite shelves being empty in store, all of the items we requested were still delivered.
If you have elderly relatives that are struggling to get supplies, it is straightforward to set up an account on any of the supermarket’s websites and have their groceries delivered to them.
