The Army to distribute PPE such as masks, safety glasses, gloves, aprons and protective suits to frontline NHS staff
It has been confirmed that the Army will be brought in to support frontline NHS staff, getting deliveries of protective equipment to those who are battling the coronavirus pandemic.
Matt Hancock, the health secretary, has admitted there have been “challenges” with the supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) but insisted he was taking the issue “very seriously”.
“We are taking urgent action to ensure dedicated frontline NHS and social care staff – who are working tirelessly to tackle this outbreak – feel supported.”
“Today they are getting millions more PPE kits as part of that promise.”
“We are working round the clock to make sure trucks are on the ground across the country delivering protective equipment to all who need it, so they are well-equipped to continue to fight the virus.”
Army trucks will deliver the equipment to “all who need it”, health secretary Matt Hancock said on Monday.
Almost 4,000 NHS workers signed a letter in the Sunday Times calling on Boris Johnson and his government to “protect the lives of the life-savers” and fix the “unacceptable shortage of protective equipment”.
They said that many health care professionals are “putting their lives on the line every day” by treating patients with COVID-19 without the necessary equipment.
According to the NHS, access to appropriate PPE has been under increased pressure due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but also due to a manufacturing slowdown, especially in China.
