Earlier, US President Donald Trump admitted his government was experiencing difficulties in securing lifesaving medical equipment.

He tweeted:

“The World market for face masks and ventilators is Crazy. We are helping the states to get equipment, but it is not easy.”

New York is one of the world’s most heavily affected areas in terms of the gorwth-rate of the virus. Authorities have had to rush to set up thousands of hospital beds that will be need to protect the city’s 8.4 million people.

Over 12,000 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in New York City and 125 have died, with lockdown having taking effect across the whole state since Monday.

NYC’s hospitals are getting close to having shortages of basic supplies. Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced plans to convert a New York City convention centre into a hospital.

“This is going to get much worse before it gets better,” he said.

Mr Cuomo also announced two experimental medical precedures in a hope to aid in the battle against the illness, as a precation before more sophisticated therapies are developed.

Health workers have planned to collect plasma from those people who have recovered after contracting COVID-19, and inject the antibody-rich fluid into patients still battling the coronavirus.
